notifications not working!

I have has my hero from TELUS for about a week now and I would have to say that its a great phone if it weren't for some of the bugs the worst of which is the lack of working notifications!
I have tried everything to get the ring warning, the Led at the top and the flashing track ball to work but to mo avail.
They work intermittently at best. Has anyone else has similar issues with notifications? Has anyone hears if this will be fixed in future updates?

Another huge issue for me is when I add items to my Google calendar. It doesn't sync all the info properly? Misses the location information! Even my iPaq 6515 did a better job than this.
