Yesterday, I just bought my bro-in-laws old Hero to be used as a WiFi toy. I'm on Verizon . . . too much money . . . you know the story.

Any who. I let the phone charge over night and just started getting into things. The phone hooks up to my home wireless just fine and can do whatever I want in that aspect.

But, two problems. My phone will not hook up with HTC Sync on either my laptop, or my dad's computer (he's got a Thunderbolt) and I get a server error when trying to go into the marketplace. (don't have Play on it. The phone hasn't been used for about a year)

The phone was formatted when I bought it, if that helps too. I'm new to android from a technical issue standpoint. I've never had to mess around with one of them. My dad's phone has been his problem, so if someone can help me out, and explain things well, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well I just did a factory reset and now the market will try to boot up for a split second, but kicks back almost immediately to the home screen.

So I don't have a server error any more, but I still can't get to the market. Is there any way to download Google Play? I can get online with the phone. I can also download something from my laptop onto my SD card.

Do you have your Sprint HTC Hero in airplane mode with Wi-Fi on? Sometimes turning airplane mode off and letting it connect to a cell tower will make the Android Market work.

Yes, I know your handset does not have service, but for some reason the Android Market wants to see a cellular connection to work. Obviously, you would also need Wi-Fi on to have the actual data work.

If he's on the stock Android 2.1 with HTC Sense ROM he will not be able to use the Google Play Store. You need Android 2.2 and up for the Google Play Store to work.

He will be stuck with the old Android Market. If he flashes a custom ROM with Android 2.2 or above, then he can have the Google Play Store.
