*Official Trapster Thread*

This app is a neat idea, but is not really practical. Nothing replaces having a radar/laser detector, or better yet a radar/laser jammer.

exactly the combo i have

Actually it is very practical since radar doesn't pick up on red light cameras and speed cameras at lights.
I use it all the time and it's VERY practical - and very accurate as of yet.

yes they do. this is the radar detector i have.

https://www.escortradar.com/store/passport-9500ix.html

Have built in GPS support for red light cameras, speed cameras, known speed traps. until the day that my droid can pick up on radar bands or jam laser guns then ill keep using my current combo

this app is great for people who dont have these resources (radar detector/laser jammers) and useful as an aid for those who do. never hurts to have a backup, just in case

The PASSPORT 9500ix also comes pre-loaded with thousands of safety camera locations, including red light and speed-based cameras throughout North America. You can also download updates, back up your data, and stay on top of new threats directly from our website.

Because you have to download new locations, this will always be outdated. When they build electronics, the build and load date could be a year previous, you never know.
You should test them side by side for accuracy, at least on the red light cameras.

At the rate that Chicago puts up red light cameras I would have to update every night and pray it was accurate. Trapster is nice because I can just report one on the fly and people can join in.

Seriously, you should check them side by side - I would be curious to know.

I have been testing trapster along with my current setup and i found trapster to be very accurate. sometimes my escort wouldnt pick up a camera but trapster did, and sometimes the other way around.

yes the only flaw of the escort is it needs to be updated. theres updates released every week on tuesday which i download and upload to my detector the same day so im never out of date.

yes trapster is easier cuz you dont need to do anything to update, its right there. like ive said before, its the best solution for people who dont have a radar detector like the escort 9500ix. its only downfall, it cant detect radar and jam laser lol

I have a passport 8500 and I had the ZR3 version of this:
Laser Shifter ZR4 - Radar Detectors | Laser Detectors | Radar & Laser Experts ESCORT Radar

It works with yours. I had mine hardwired to the car and into the wire that connected to the radar detector. This is actually meant to work with the passport.
I did get lasered once and it blared the highest pitch sound and said "shifting" if I recall correctly. The point is that you have a certain amount of feet to slow down - if you get too close and are cocky, they can then get you.

At the time this was the best of the best and I proved it to myself as a worthwhile investment.
I picked up the combo on ebay at the time for a cool $500 :)
Just look at alot of independent reviews.

Sean, do you know if the Trapster versions will ever be (more or less) in sync across the different platforms? The iPhone version has so many cool features - iHate wating for them to trickle down to the Android version! It's like we're getting big brother's hand-me-downs! ;)

Yes, features usually start in the iPhone. This comes down to numbers, right now we have over 3 million users, 2 million on the iPhone alone, so we tend to focus on that platform. It is a double edge sword though, since adding so many features does make the app heavy, and sometimes sluggish. We will add more features to all platforms with each update. What are you suggesting we add to android that we have already on the iPhone?

* That quick button for reporting a trap is a must have, imo.

* I think I've mentioned this one before, but I really like the feature that rotates the map so that the current direction of travel is always "up".

* I'd really also like to see the caravan feature - that'd be really handy for road trips.

* Those extra Road Hazard alerts would be nice, too!

* And the Patrol feature!

* and... :D

Ok, your requests have been heard. I will keep you updated. Remember Trapster is a small startup company, we are working as fast as we can to get all platforms updated.

Thanks,

Sean

If you notice that Trapster did not have the camera on the trapmap, make sure you add it :D

Thanks for the feedback!

Sean - I only have a couple minor issues with Trapster, otherwise everything is phenomenal.
My 1/4 mile isn't even close to that distance, it is barely 200 feet in most instances - I then have to switch to half a mile.
In Chicago, we have ALOT of RLCs. The issue that I have is that, especially at 1/2 mile and especially when running in background with GNavi, I have a difficult time knowing which light it is telling me about. Since it's a spread, or a circumference around the car, it may and has picked up RLCs a couple blocks over, therefore giving me cameras that are completely off of my path.
Maybe something could be done as far as notifications for upcoming streets, not many streets up.
Lastly - Sometimes I have to press the button on my droid screen multiple times for it to do something. IE, to "exit" I will press it, it will light up and the menu goes away, but I am still in the program. This particular one happens almost every time.

Also - rotating map so you are facing "up" = +1
Patrol feature = +1
