I'm definitely an Android newbie and trying to catch up on all this site has to offer. I know I have lots of reading to do yet...

I don't currently have any Android devices, but looking to get a couple of new phones form my wife and I and trying to figure out what's the best for us. I'm a born-again techie, but my wife is not. I'm interested in something that can be rooted and used with a wifi tether hack. (Hoping to get an android table in a few months).

I'm looking at Droid X from Verizon but not opposed to switching carriers. I'm looking at the free phone offers on newegg.com (w/contract).

    Thanks,
    EB

Droid X has locked boot-loader, however there is rooted 2.3 so you can use wifi tether for free. You just can't upgrade to 2.4 if moto doesn't make it (80% chance they will). However if you really want to run ice cream whenever it gets released you'd better off with a nexus S, or something. But otherwise the Droid X is a great phone, good battery life.

I've narrowed my choices down to

    VERIZON
    Motorola Droid X
    HTC Droid Incredible
    LG Vortex
    Samsung Continuum

    SPRINT
    Samsung Transform
    LG Optimus S

I could really use some advice on what's the best of these in terms of usability and ease of rooting/customizing. It's taking a lot of time to sift through the threads in the phone forums.

    Thanks,
    EB

I think your best bet will just be to google it. There are tons of websites out there dedicated to comparing phones, they put them up side by side with specs and opinions after using multiple phones. You can see which phones are strong in what areas, and what matters to you. I went with the Droid X, it had all the best features at the right price. The Thunderbolt is faster, technically, and soon we've got the Droid Bionic and the Droid X2... but there's never going to be a time where something new ISN'T just a few weeks away, and in my opinion the bionic and droid x are part of the same generation, just slight upgrades.
I tested the droid x, thunderbolt and incredible at a verizon store and could barely notice a difference between droid x's 3g and tbolt's 4g, not enough to justify a $150 difference. The droid X and incredible had a noticeable difference for me, with the x being much faster. I also loved the x's bigger screen and bigger battery.
