Hopefully someone can help me sort this out.

So when I first started using ROMs after rooting, I was using nandroid backup/recovery. I was also told that it would be a good idea to install Titanium after rooting, so I did, and I back up onto a folder on the sdcard all my data and apps from Titanium, as well as for nandroid. When I installed ROM Manager, it told me to update to ClockworkMod Recovery, so I have that installed too, although I'm not sure if I've ever made a backup with it.

My question is, are there any reasons to even have more than one of these? And which is considered to be the most important/reliable? Basically I'm just lost of the entire issue of backup/recovery.

Well if you flashed ClockworkMod Recovery then you don't have SPRecovery anymore as you can only have one at a time. Titanium works to back up your apps with data and market links intackt.

ClockworkMod is for backing up and installing ROMs and themes. It is pretty much the same as SPRecovery in how it is used, however I find it to be more robust and easier in the fact that you don't have to rename anything (for example SPR makes you rename everything to update.zip, where as CM will install the .zip without having to change the name).

You can only use 1 recovery at a time. So its either SPRecovery or Clockwork Recovery. Personally I have been using clockwork for awhile and have no intentions of switching back.

Backups made in one recovery will not work for the other recovery. So if you are switching back between them be sure to have a nandroid of both kinds.

Titanium backup is really completely different. It is helpful for when you wipe between roms. It makes it easy to get all your apps and app data back.

So nandroid backs up ROMs as well as clockwork and sprecovery...and titanium is used for data and apps? Is that what you're saying?

A nandroid is kind of the generic term for making a full back up of your ROM. This can be done in both clockwork or sprecovery. Titanium is used for data and apps. You are correct... :)

Trust me once you play around with it for a bit and read some forums you will get it, there is a lot of lingo to get your head around but it isn't that bad once you get the hang of it.
