There may be ways, but I don't know how brave you are.

I would root the device and go from there. You can change just about everything on the phone. It just takes a little know-how.

I like the new black and white color fade screen off transition. Waaaay more modern. You have to keep changing things to keep them fresh. Staleness and not changing with the times kills operating systems.

black and white...?? I don't know what you are talking about.. what I see is a simple fade out... to black
[it could look way more modern...] but.... that's just a look, the device is already modern.. thats why the contras of that old fashioned thing is so cool, because it makes it unique.
is that why the new gen of Camaros are so "cool" because they went back to follow its original old stlyle lines.... remember how lost were the lines for the 86-02 Camaro?
but following that attitude.. the 2002 Camaro was SO modern for that time (talking about its style/design) it was SO modern that it looks more like an spaceship without wings, way far of its original lines.... I know the comparison is not too fair.. but what I mean, they just add to the new Camaro its original line to make it retro... that was what asus did with the nexus 7 2013.. but then since lollipop is the first OS for the nexus 7 2013 google put its hand without the manufacturer behind.. they did whatever they wanted...

[you have to keep changing thing to keep them fresh... ] I am sorry I don't go with that, no with a a more solid reason, I change things to make it better and I NEVER stop, but not just because its not fresh... I try to make it the better possible.. but through real improvements not thru looks.

what kills OS is not fixing its defects and to stop its improvement.. IMPROVEMENT, usually improvements go with hand of the "look" because real improvements are based in efficiency (to do the same with less or to do more with the same... so that will force things toward more ergonomics, simpler and more common sense created things.. that WILL change its look....
    that's the whole story....

BUT NOT JUST changing the "look"

that could work... with certain public and with certain products...

and just to be clear... I am not against changing things.. but against unjustified changes.

Screen off is just a "look". That's what I was commenting on. Whether or not it was for the better is a matter of opinion. I like it. Watch it closely, its more than a fade to black. It could be because I use nova launcher that may change it, but I doubt it. There are many improvements in efficiency also. Along with serious and much awaited security updates.
If you don't make aesthetic changes to an interface to stay updated or even just to keep it fresh and new, It gets categorized as antiquated. And that is something google cannot afford to allow to happen to its mobile operating system. I personally thought the screen off transition was fine. Nothing special. But the updated one is more fluid and keeping with the " material" theme in a coding sense. And there will be a way to change it to your liking easier once (if ever) xposed framework is able to work on art runtime.

It definitely fades to black and white, while the display fades off.

I agree with you in some points like:
yes its just a look, so its a matter of opinion... nothing really technical behind it (but anyway I think a fade uses more recourses than the old tv effect lol)

but about the improvement in efficiency... also have been many complains about that.. that why the recent update only weeks after the "big" release.

about the aesthetic changes.. I am ok with that.. as long it is for a better look...
but I understand that google can not afford that... they get they pennies doing that... I recognize it, they are good, not to my taste, but they are good, BUT... but but...
a vry short story.. I have a friend that works for google, he was ina very nice, successful and promising project.. but because a "internal" time expired... they halt the project and continued with another thing 180 degree different to what they were doing.. without any reasonable reasons.... and that guy is not a low line employee... but the project was stoped just because... something new was needed...
I have several responses form developers about that behavior from google...
that could work for now. but not forever and less than what you expected...
that attitude remember me also the Pied Piper of Hamelin...

    but
again I agree with you... I can understand the change.... because the oldfashioned tv style for the screen when off would not go with the lollipop style... (bold, diabetic sweet and wonderland).

just would like to give me an option to get it...
honestly if not because the bunch of data I have there... I would exchange my nexus 7 for any kitkat running plus 50 bucks

You can go back to KitKat with a quick fastboot flash of the factory image. If your not good with fastboot, wugfresh nexus root toolkit will do it for you! I was considering doing it because my favorite app (dish anywhere) doesn't work on art yet. [emoji22]
    Great chat by the way.

but.... can i do that without root?

    yeah;)!
I'm not so good in English like in Spanish when talking about these things...

do you think the nexus 7 2013 will enjoy another change of flavor?.

honestly would like another OS "sharper" (not so bold) like the lollipop, but i gues that for that, at least year nd a half must pass, then nexus 7 2015?

Yes you can do it without root. Install this on your computer. It is wugs nexus toolkit for windows. It will allow you to install any version of android available for nexus 7. It will also root or unroot or just about anything you want to do. It is the "must have" toolkit for nexus owners.

It goes dim for about a second, and then black and white for about a 1/4 of a second. Almost a blink and you miss it. I agree I liked the original version better, and I can't really see it giving it an antiquated look. Have you ever heard someone say "Have you seen how the screen turns off? It makes it look so behind the times."

On another note, what's with the zebra pattern before the keyboard pops up? Every time I see it, it feels like my screen is going out. This might be the first time since I bought the device that I'll go with a third party launcher. IMO I'm not impressed with the look.

The screen off reminds me of a SciFi movie when a person blinks out of existence. Kind of fade then flash then out. And I just meant keeping things the same makes the system antiquated. Things change, its what they do. Always have and always do. Android is maturing into a more upscale operating system. If it doesn't change, people (users and critics alike) start calling it stale and dated. It happens with all operating systems. Some things we like, some we don't. Hopefully what we like outweighs what we don't.

That's fine, but my point was for such a small part of the OS, if they had left it but everything else about Lollipop was the same, I doubt that anyone would've started raising the pitchforks over it. As far as the fade out, other phones have been doing that for years. They may not have had the black & white for the split second before it went off, but otherwise it's not a new thing. And I probably wouldn't have noticed the b/w unless you told me. At least what the Nexus had was unique, what they have now has been around for awhile.
