z4root is a one click solution to root and un-root your device. However, it does not work for NAND locked devices.

In z4root 1.3, temporary root option is available for NAND devices. It will allow NAND devices to be temporary rooted until the next reboot.

This is one term I haven't figured out yet. What does 'NAND locked' mean and why would it prevent unrooting?

Z4ROOT was pulled from the market again some time yesterday.

See the dev's thread over on XDA: [APP] z4root - xda-developers

Download the file and put it on your SD card. Navigate to the file with a file manager like Astro and open the file. You may be asked in install an app from an unknown source, check the box. Install the app and run it.

It took two tries for me for root to take. First one got hung up, pulled the battery and ran it after the reboot. Took about 30 seconds.

I can't give an exact definition, but it has to do with the manufacturers, I believe most notably to date Motorola, configuring the hardware/firmware in such a way as to prevent modification by the end user. Such phones are ostensibly harder to root if they can be rooted at all. I expect we'll see more of this in the future.

I can confirm that z4root works on the EVO version 3.30 BUT only with temporary root!!! You can have all the things that rooted users have except ROMS and ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1 .. So you might ask Why do I want this then ? Well with Temporary Root you get to Tether your Wireless for free hotspot use and to me that's all I really need anyway. Also you can remove the Sprint Bloat ware and make other changes to the OS but again no custom ROMS because you can’t load the ClockworkMod recovery. The version I’m using is 1.3.0 good luck

I have a Captivate and both temporary root and permanent root work, but after a little while, my screen freezes and I have to pull the battery out. I'm just gunna root in the old fashion way.

I had the same problem. I had the app before an update came out a few weeks ago and it loaded, rooted and unrooted easily. After update came out(just installed over previous one) when I tried the Rooting process it hung up completely but did reboot on battery removal but it wasn't Rooted. I uninstalled the app completely re installed new updated app and again it stalled at Reboot but this time after battery removal the phone was Rooted and doing fine. I have Galaxy S.

App seems to work on my vibrant, I am now in the process of trying to uninstall some junkware. I am new to rooting (but not android itself) and this certainly was easy and seemed to work flawlessly. Now what else besides titanium can I use to uninstall some junkware?

z4root itself will not, you will need to install something else to uninstall crapware
