Help Only getting badge on icon notification

Hello all

I just bought the new Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. I have been an Iphone user since 2008. So this is my first android phone ever.
So if this is a stupid question please forgive me.

If only i want a badge on the Icon saying there is something new how do i do this? I don't want any pop up message or anything else. I just want the badge icon.

Most launchers by default will show the badge on the icons. I use Nova launcher prime along with Tesla unread to show them. You'll need to check your settings in the launcher you decide to go with.
