Help Operating System Update

Just got the moment from Sprint.

According to the phone, it's still on version 1.5

Is there a way to update it to 2.1? Would like to get some apps, (Launcher Pro, Epocrates, etc.). When I do a search on the android marketplace, it doesn't show up...... I assume its because of the older OS.

Help please!!! Didn't know I was getting such an old phone?!?!?!
