Optimus V Memorial Day Sales

Thorsten, there's one of you in every forum. Someone that tries to dispute, argue, disprove, and make other forum members look bad.

I used Ebay for years and years, have 100% feedback on over the 10 items (buying and selling), I've done thru the years. I refuse to pay Ebay 15% in fees to sell a simple item such as a phone. this is a personal choice. Paypal offers seller protection, and definately doesn't have to be connected to Ebay for someone to feel comfortable making a purchase.

you're making a 1 month used phone sound awful. Its got 11 months of the warranty left. I have the original receipt i'll give the buyer.

Perhaps when the sale ends on 06/04/11 at Radio Shack, then the $135 I am wanting for the phone will suddenly return to a "great buy" (when they go back up to $199 PLUS tax).

So, just because YOU dont like the terms and conditions of my sale, don't bash it......Others might be interested!

Great buy? Hardly! Keep in mind that this is a used phone where the seller refuses to use eBay (and presumably any other platform that protects the buyer). All this for $135

I don't have foursquare-- but here's what I know:

- it's one of those geo-locating apps so you can let all your friends ( and all the fourquare advertisers) know where you are.

- You have to sign up at foursquare.com for an account-- and the details and explanation of their jargon and the details of the sale-- It has to be your first "check-in" at Radio Shack.

- it generally presumes that you have a smart phone. if you don't, you may be able ( don't take my word for it!) to do this with a "feature phone" using their mobile site and text messaging.

How do I check in via mobile web? : foursquare Support

Not clear if using the mobile web will work for the sale or not.

- you might want to do this first-- check this link to be sure the radio Shack you're planning on is participating inthe sale ( and, hopefully, has an Optimus V in stock)

https://foursquare.com/search?q=radio+shack

replace whatever is in the "near" field with a town or zipcode. The participating stores have an orange label that says "special"

... People must dump their insanely expensive 2-year choke-hold contracts by the millions and flock to VMU. Only then will U.S. cellphone pricing change for the long run (and hopefully align for with prices in Europe and the rest of the world). ...

I agree absolutely! As long as naive and sheepish US consumers are willing to pay those outrageous highway-robbery prices that the US cell companies are charging nowadays, they'll just continue business-as-usual and butt-ream whatever the market would bear. Until consumers get smart, start talking and walking with their hard-earned dollars, there's slim chance that mobile prices would become more comparable with the rest of the world.

ok so to update....

i ended up going back to radio shack on monday, where i talked to the store manager. she told me that it was her stores policy to sell minutes with the phone. i didnt have to activate.. but i had to buy minutes.

we had called virgin mobile sunday night to check to see if this was legit and they said it wasnt. radio shacks terms of service and all that also popped up nothing.

so i argued with the lady about it, and she told me to hold on where she then got on the phone and called best buy. she identified herself, asked if they would price match on an ad printed from the internet and they said they would. she then personally printed the ad for me.. and wished me good luck.

i then went to the parking lot, called best buy.. and confirmed the same thing.

i had to wait a few days because of busy stuff at work, but today i went to my local best buy.. headed to electronics. deflected the sharks in blue shirts, grabbed the phone and headed to the register.

once at the register i scanned intently to see which of the clerks seemed to have it the most together, where i settled upon "craig" a "customer specialist"

i then walked up, laid the paper and the phone down and said "i called ahead and they said you would price match this". without hesitation, craig sold me the phone at the radio shack price no questions asked, no minutes sold, no patriot act, no asking me for my taliban ID number.

then i got home, called up virgin mobile... spoke to richard, who sounded like he could narrate an audio version of fabios latest love novel, and within an hour and a half, i now have my phone activated, online.. and am a legit virgin mobile customer.

theres two days left on this radio shack deal if anyone has a friend who wants to print it up and hit best buy.

now,.... onto downloading words with friends...

Use Foursquare and check in at RadioShack and get an addional 20% discount. Show the clerk the phone with the check-in deal and they must honor it. I bought my Optimus V on sale for $149.99 and they took an additional $30 off for final price of $119.99!

Only annoyance was them forcing me to activate in-store and hassling me to buy insurance, extra battery, blah blah I said "NO, JUST THE PHONE" but I did buy $25 airtime card just to get the phone turned on. I didn't want to port my existing number immediately, I want to make sure Sprint/Virgin Mobile coverage is solid where I live and work plus all points between. I figured $120 was a low risk for a nice phone!

Thanks so much for this tip. I tried with no success. I don't have a smartphone and used the clunky foursquare via SMS. This didn't produce a coupon or code for me. I sprung for the Optimus V anyway, with a $10 off coupon.

First RS I went to was lousy. Rude staff, manager didn't know what she was talking about. They insisted I buy at least $10 in minutes and activate the phone. $10 not too bad but I walked. This was in the Manhattan Mall in midtown which is a lousy place.

I had much better luck at a seemingly nastier place - Port Authority bus terminal. Woman who helped was very helpful and actually tried to understand what I was trying to do. I couldn't get the foursquare discount but at least she relented on insisting on activating or paying for minutes. Saying the phone was for someone else did the trick.

I may try to check-in with foursquare with the phone at the store, and if that gets me the code I'll try to return and re-purchase. I don't like doing that sort of thing but the helpful woman said I could, provided I have all the packaging and the receipt.

I'll definitely go for a plan, probably $25, but I wanted to see how much I like the phone and how much I can get away with just on wifi. I live in Manhattan, so I'm hoping I can go far on wifi. I have it at home and my local bar has it so that covers most of my free time.

Sorry for the lenghty email. Wanted to share my experience with foursquare, Radio Shack, and midtown Manhattan.

I'm looking forward to relying on these forums.

Thanks again.

Don't know if you're new to the whole android world or these forums, but Skype works over 3G data now- so you can always use Skype as long as you have a connection to VM/Sprint or WiFi. As long as you're willing to put in a little set-up time you won't ever need more than the $25 plan.

Get a Skype subscription and "Skype out" phone number, ( all together works out to about 5 and change a month for unlimited calls to US and Canada.) Just give out your Skype number for voice calls, use the reg. phone connectionfor text/mms. You can even set up an automaic "reject message" on the VM line that sends the call to voice mail and texts a message- like please call 123-123-1234 for voice calls. If someone does leave a mesage on your voice mail with VM, it will show in the notification bar.

Some people are doing a similar deal through Google Voice (which I haven't tried) but from what I have read, this is simpler and less prone to problems- and I already had Skype as my home number.

So it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to RS, told the guy I was there to pickup my new VM Optimus V, that I would be paying $149 - the 20% for either the google check-in or the foursquare check-in... I asked which he preferred, he came back with "gee I don't think you can do those two discounts together".... hahaha I said, I told him I had researched this and read it here on this forum, I had called other RS near to where I lived which they confirmed and I had twitted RS this morning about it. He didn't say another word and went in the back and brang me my new phone! $119 :D

Finally got my V Saturday at Best Buy for 149.99.( I prefer BB over RS ) They matched the RS price by looking at the RS website since it wasn't in a RS printed ad. Also got two 4 GB sd cards for 7.99 ea. at BB with a price match. Now I will keep my V in the box and not use it for two weeks until my contract expires with other carrier. 30 day return policy at BB but will not even use until 6/19... Oh well, these will be a long two weeks having the phone and not using it. Can't I use it here at home with wifi even though it is not activated?

Betcha' a $1 you don't keep it in the box.:)

Yes, you can use it on wifi without activating. If the activate thing keeps popping up,just hit the back key.

And if you set it up with Skype you can use it for phone calls in and out on WiFi, and then 3G after you're activated.

...until my contract expires.

Just in case you aren't thinking about this---- you have to port first ( assuming you're porting), before you cancel your current carrier. I wouldn't wait til the last day, just in case VM screws it up.
