now bear with me, but.....seeing as the legend is the direct follow-up to he hero.....would that not mean that the hero is probably coming to the end of its cycle?

The end of the cycle in HTC's eyes yes, because their business model relies on getting new phones released every few months. Whether or not it's the end of the hero's actual life cycle depends on if you buy into that model too.

end of life cycle means the following.

Introduction - About 10 months ago
Growth - 9 months till Legend was release
Maturity - 2.1 update and what ever
Decline - Legend replacement arrives
Withdrawl - HTC actually stop making them

thank you for your comments of experience, i see that i will have a very enjoyable time with my hero and on these forums when i get my phone i shall wait a week or two, then root it (Y)

You will love the Hero (it is NO tape Deck!)..
Take a few weeks to get familiar with it (took me months lol).
