Help OTG connection for the Note - help please

I've bought an OTG connection kit to use with my Galaxy note and also with my iPad2. So far I've drawn a complete blank with it which is a pain as I was hoping to use it to back up my photos on holiday this week. I have tried it with both an SD card reader and a USB stick. When I connect the SD card reader I get the message that the SD card is connected. I am not sure where to go from here. I have tried looking for the files on the SD card and data stick using ES File Explorer and have found a folder called usbStorage which has a sub-folder called USB Drve A but it is empty. Is there something I need to do to get access to the files? Thanks for any help.

I just looked on Amazon for the OTG connection kit - and wow - there are so many reviews saying exactly what you say.

So - I don't have any help, sorry, I was just surprised to see a product with so many negative reviews.
