Overheating, Poor Performance, Severe Battery Draining While Idle.

Recently I've been having overheating issues with my Note 3, this is causing very bad battery drain, it's getting to the point where it will drain 30-40% on powersaving mode while being used for about an hour, on light loads such as browsing.

I understand this could be just an issue with the battery but I'm not so sure about the overheating issue. After a good 10-15 mins after booting the phone, it will get to about 60-70 degrees. The CPU also spikes all over the place, one minute 40% (this is average for it with nothing running) to 90-100%.

The phone is rooted, and I've gone ahead and killed or froze all the unnecessary apps that run/startup in the background but I'm still having this overheating issues. I regularly kill unneeded processes and clean caches but nothing seems to be working.

Keep in mind it jumps to 60 degrees while nothing is running, and its sitting idle on my desk. it's getting to the point where I have to turn my phone off just to get it to cool down.

There's never "nothing running" on these phones, so spiking to 60 could still be a sign that apps are going rogue in the background. Maybe one of the many battery monitor apps could identify the cause is it happens often enough to show up in the overall statistics.

On the other hand it's also possible that it's a motherboard problem.

It is an older phone, and was bought off someone; although they said it sat in its box for whatever length of time. I get that "nothing running" is never true and it was used loosely, I meant it sat idle and all unnecessary apps were killed.

As for the rouge problem, I'm not too familiar with Android yet and don't know of any solutions to this problem. If the solution is a factory reset, will backing up the phone cause the problem again?
