So I'm trying to flash Lightning Rom 3.3.1. When in HBOOT it sees the file, says Parsing PG05IMG.zip then returns back to the main HBOOT screen.

No prompt to flash, just returns to the screen.

I don't want to move forward from here, definitely not willing to risk fscking it up any more than I may already have.

You need to remove the PG05IMG.zip from the root of your SD card. You should have no problems getting into recovery after removing it

in the future, always remove PG05IMG files after youre done with them, for this reason.

the phone prolly isnt asking you to update becasue there is a section inside the file that id doesnt recognize. i made up a new splash screen, and forgot to rename the image "splash1" and when i went to flash it,thats exactly what happened-found the file, checked it,then just back to hboot.

what is this file on your sd card? hopefully youre not trying to flash lightening in hboot instead of recovery

As both Wormdoes and Scotty85 said, the PG05IMG file should be either removed from your sd or renamed, ie PG05IMG_MR2 etc, if you want to keep there so hboot doesn't see it. It sounds as if you've renamed the rom to PG05IMG to flash it...incorrect. Leave it as is and install from from recovery
