When I am listening to music with headphones plugged in, and a call comes in, I can answer and hear the caller, but the phone's mic seems to be disabled.

A quick search showed the following thread:

    http://androidforums.com/htc-hero-sprint/20159-talking-phone-w-headphones-problem.html

No real solutions there, just people saying they were experiencing the same issues.

Is this a general issue with Android, or is it a problem on a per-phone basis? Is there any way to enable the phone's mic so I can answer the phone without unplugging the headphones?

I have this same problem w/ my new Thunderbolt. On my old MotoDroid, I was able to use headphones and talk on the phone with no problem--I'd keep the phone in the car dock and have the call's audio play through the car's speakers via audio cable, and the mic on the phone was strong enough to pick up my voice. Alas, this doesn't seem to be the case with the Thunderbolt, and I'm totally not happy about it. :(
