how much effect does a phone cover and screen protector have on an androids internal antenna?

To my knowledge...none. I've had both on all my devices with zero issues. That type of problem would likely occur with the material used to make the device. For example: The problem that the iPhone had..because of where the antenna was located.

Plastic or leather will have no effect.

I do have a flip case which has a metal frame around the outside under the leather. This has no noticeable effect on the cellular signal, but does affect GPS reception (and the compass!), so I prefer not to use that one when navigating

The flip side is that it does however offer more protection than my case-mate, so it still has its place for me.
