Didn't really know what else to put for the title as there are a few issues that seem related.

First, I sometimes get ghost notifications, where the sound will play, but there is no actual notification.

Second, my phone seems to not check for updates until just after a reboot.

Third, I just missed a call and text. Neither showed up until I rebooted.

I'm on z4 (radio and kernel updated), some apps removed, but nothing integral AFAIK. I'm using GravityBox for some cosmetic tweaks.

Any suggestions as to the issue?

The ghost notification, exactly what does it sound like?
Updates after reboot, my phone always did that most of the time.
Never really missed calls or texts unless it was a service issue.

i'm wonder if it could be a ram issue where the phone kills the app right after the notification.

It just plays my notification sound, even vibrates, but then there's no notification.

I should point out that I don't like getting notifications from apps, so I disable them within the app, or in manager if the app doesn't have the option.

Hmmmm... Because me and my mom used to get a random beep. It wasn't the same sound as the notifications, just a beep. But we'd have no notification. Eventually it went away on its own. She's got a moto g.

in this version of android you can disable notification from within settings too:

settings > apps > app name, then directly under "force stop" uncheck "show notifications".

Yeah, that's what I just said.

oh, i thought by 'manager' you meant a different special app.
