Root Phone locked with unlock pattern, need to root?

My phone is locked after entering the unlock pattern incorrect too many times.

It asks me for gmail username/password but this doesnt work, have tried dozens of combinations etc.

The only option I think at this stage is to root the phone, but my Bootloader is .92.

Can I root the phone using this?

It's an unbranded Desire, running Froyo official HTC update.

The answer to that is not at the moment where rooting is concerned.

Did you not set up a gmail or google mail account?

also to reset it needs to use GPRS. so if you auto connect to wifi, you need to go out of range of your wifi and then use your google details
