Hi everyone. I just recently upgraded to an HTC Evo 4g with Sprint. This is my very first Android phone and I'm still learning. The phone was given to me by my older brother who upgraded to Samsung Galaxy S2.

Anyway, when he had the phone it was rooted, but when he restored the phone to factory settings in order to give it to me we both thought it still was. Turns out it wasn't. I was browsing the internet for answers as to how to move apps to my SD card, and I saw an old post stating that he was using the 2.2 firmware update. When I checked my phone's firmware, it said that it was "2.1-update1".

So I went to the HTC website and it says that the latest firmware for this phone is 4.53.651.1. When I follow the instructions "Menu > Settings > System Updates > HTC software update > Check now" it says that my phone is up to date. I am very confused at this point because the phone is not rooted and it won't update.

So I joined this forum looking for answers. Can anyone please help me out? I've jailbroken iDevices for some time now but I heard that Android phones are very different. So I was hoping for a quick easy guide to root the phone and some answers as how to get the latest firmware update.

In advancement, thank you very much!

well if you want to root, we need some info first. what is your hboot? power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader(hboot) screen. at the top will list your hboot version. if it is hboot 2.1 or below then follow this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if it is hboot 2.16 or higher then follow this guide:
    http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

and once you are rooted then all you would have to do is flash a 4.53 (the latest ota) rom. you can find it in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html sticky at the top of this forum.
