My EVO comes with a bunch of standard phone number labels; home, work, mobile, fax, pager... Is there a way to add a new label like "Wife's #" or "Lake House"....

    Check the iPhone's custom labels.

You could choose "custom" on the Hero, then type in anything you wanted. I still have custom labels in my phonebook from before. I think the EVO had them until Froyo too. No idea why they took it out, getting a little tired of some of the best features being removed or ruined in the new builds.

You can go to gmail online and edit a contact, the option for custom is available there. It will automatically sync to your phonebook once you've changed it.
