Phone turns on for only 4 seconds

I have a Samsung Galaxy Young and I have been trying to charge my phone to use it but whenever I plug it in, it either shows the battery on the screen and dots showing that it's loading for a few seconds before shutting off, or it shows a battery that is completely empty with a swirling loading sign, or it turns on for a few seconds like it's actually going to work, and then when it gets to the Samsung part, it just shuts off. Is it a problem with the battery? I just bought it about a month ago. Please help quickly!!

Leave the phone turned off. Plug in the charger. Leave it alone for 24 hours. It should be working then.

(The first few hours put VERY little charge into the battery, so charging it for a few minutes, then checking it, will kill whatever little charge it got.)
