I basically only had my phone rooted to get wifi tether, but now that that's not functional on even rooted phones, I want to go back to the stock software to circumvent some of the software bugs from my rooted phone.

I have tried running the 3.15 RUU(my phone is currently version 3.15) and it says it always fails. I've also tried accepting the most recent OTA but the phone just reboots into TWRP and doesn't go through the OTA. Does anyone have any insight on this issue?

    Yes.

You need to relock your bootloader before applying an RUU and RUUs are version sensitive. Hold off on that route until one of the RUU experts can pitch in.

Never take an OTA while rooted. It tends to lead to real trouble.

Please let us know your present configuration: s-on/off, and versions for hboot, radios, etc etc. I think that the guys are going to need those.

BTW - you also have the option to simply flash an earlier revision of a stock rooted rom, and then remove root if you don't want even that. Not sure if you knew about that.

I would sit in and watch the ruu experts, myself. Watch and learn. :)

I second the idea of flashing a stock rooted rom, leaves you all the options and should only have the same problems stock users have. Can still try new roms when you feel like a change. Easier to wipe to clear problems, as well.

Need that info to figure out which stock rooted rom to suggest though, I believe.

    The device is unlocked
    S-ON
    HBOOT: 2.09
    Radio: 1.12.11.1119

I used the unlock method from here

How to Relock the HTC EVO 4G LTE Bootloader - YouTube

a while back to relock the device and it ended up getting stuck in the bootloop and I went through hell trying to fix the phone, and ended up with the internal storage on my device getting completely wiped.

Sounds like you have had a heck of a time with that phone!

I am not really sure how you should proceed, myself, but some of the other guys will be able to straighten you out.

In general though, as I understand it, you have the choice to take it back to stock and then take the OTA's to bring your phone up to the latest.

Or you could S-off and bring it up to date in the rooted side of the house.

rooted has more options, either way would be some work. And the guys who know more should help you with it.

Think about it try not to rush into anything till they can lend a hand, ok?

and by the way i just added a RUU section to the guide.

good luck and let us know if you are having issues.....but to be honest there is no reason to do it. we can try and trouble shoot your issue, if you like.

Windsor just posted up something in another thread about the build.prop.

I wonder if this is the reason folks are having issues with this?

Search the build, prop with root explorer, or equivalent app, and see if "Tether Denied" is set to "True". If it is, edit it to say "False".

As far as root / unrooting, I'd advise root with S-off. Thats just me, so if you want to unroot, we'll help you get it figured out. :)
