It's a census year here in the US but, unfortunately, some 40% of Americans have failed to submit their census forms. There are many reasons people may have for this, but odds are, they're misinformed.

You're not putting yourself at risk of deportation, or anything else, by submitting your household's census form. Here in LA, both Governor Newsom and Mayor Garcetti have assured residents that no one will show up at their door to arrest, or deport, them as a result of completing the census.

But by not filling it out, you're jeopardizing your community in a number of ways. A big one: federal funding for various projects, like infrastructure improvements, will be sent elsewhere. They're based on population, so when your city's population is under-reported, there goes the funding it rightfully should've received.

If you haven't already submitted your 2020 census, please do so ASAP. You can do it online very easily. I didn't time it when I did mine, but it seems like it took less than 15 minutes.

Again, you're at no risk whatsoever of any bad results by filling it out, but your community may suffer financially if you don't.

They should make it a requirement to get the stimulus check. Then we'd have census reporting in record numbers.

The US Census isn't mandatory, unlike the UK Census?

In the UK if you fail to complete the Census form, it's upto £1000 fine and possible jail time.

The 'Karen' issue is as bad as the racial issues it's allegedly trying to emphasize. Some idiot took a commonly used name and turned it into its own biased, derogatory label, and now it's turned into a trend.

As for the Census, it's devolved into a matter of 'white privilege'. Statements that it's safe for all residents in the U.S. is a one-sided viewpoint. By definition it's supposed to only be used for allocation of governmental resources based on population statistics, but in reality all it takes is a nutjob in the White House to 're-purpose' it for his own purposes, in this case for ethnic cleansing. One typical example out of many is DACA. Countless immigrants signed up for it back when it was 'safe' to do so, when the DREAM act was actually a viable option to gain permanent residency. Now under a completely different administration we have ICE, America's 'Brown Shirts', using that listing as its contacts database to deport thousands of people.
For those of you outside the U.S., this year's Census is a very, very contentious one, a lot of us simply don't trust the current administration to use census data responsibly.

I agree with this. I, too, have a student named Karen, who is a very loving person in every way. She is afraid to tell people her name, now.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, @svim, especially the nutjob in the White House part.

Maybe I'm biased because of where I live. Los Angeles is not only a sanctuary city, the whole effing state of California is a sanctuary state! Both at a state and county level, officials have refused to comply with the orange nutjob's orders when it comes to police cooperating with ICE to round up people for deportation.

And I'm constantly seeing headlines like 'Trump sues California' and 'California sues Trump'--so much so that I no longer even read what they're about. I just rest easy knowing that my state does not/will not participate in his bullshit.

So while I'm confident that no one in California will suffer bad ramifications from submitting their census, I now see your point that it might be different elsewhere. But I still want to believe that the data collected via the census will be used appropriately.

And voting! Just think of the turnout we'd see in November if showing proof you voted was required in order to get your next stimulus check. [Registered voters only.]

LA Mayor Garcetti, today: "...So we need everybody to be counted. Don't give your money away to another state, or another city. Go to my2020census.gov and fill out the form for everybody in your household [snipping unimportant stuff]...or call (844) 330-2020. And I want to make something clear: any attempt to exclude immigrant families from this count is wrong, it is un-American, and it is unconstitutional. I want to reassure all Angelenos, especially immigrant Angelenos, that are unsure of what this means and concerned about participating, we need you to fill out the census form. You need to be counted. Your information is confidential; it's a federal crime for that to be shared by the census agency with any other level of federal government..."

Was the 2010 Census available online? I can't even remember.

It took me a few minutes to do this year's online. Alot faster than the long ass questionnaire on paper/snail mail

They used to send people to your house to do the census. When did that stop? I know budget cuts probably eliminated that but I don't even remember the last time I saw a census taker.

You're not alone! For the life of me, I can't recall anything about the 2010 census.
Yes, definitely a lot faster than old ways. I remember the 1980 census, with a person coming to my house to ask and record everything.

When I had an Ancestry account, I saved copies of old census forms containing info about various relatives, and some notable people. Fascinating!

Perhaps you're only lightly observing how the current Trump administration is doing as far as what is or isn't a federal crime. It's easy to fall back on established laws, rules, and common practices for public statements, it's not so easy when we have to look at reality. Given Trump's ethnic cleansing policies, for those of Islamic faith they are likely to be opening themselves up to visit by ICE, or the now current Trump 'police', the militarily-armed, no name tag, no insignia, no I.D. badge of any kind thugs who are kidnapping and sequestering citizens off the streets at will.
So yeah, there are laws in place but when you have president and his many, many minions who ignore those laws this creates a situation where doing something like willingly adding your contact info into a database can be a very damaging thing to do. For those waiting on their immigration status, if you're the 'right' race and religion you're safe, if you're not however than deportation is likely, or if you're lucky you'll spend an indefinite time period locked up in a 'holding center'. For American citizens, it's just as insidious as it's becoming more a matter of being loyal to our country or to a political party. The numbers obtained from the Census are supposed to determine how funds get allocated into various public services, but in practice we have very broken Congressional body that actually bases its actions on any number of other influences. Population count 'should' be a factor but that's become as manipulative as the antiquated Electoral College we still rely upon to elect our President.

You can't find anyone more anti-Trump than me, @svim, so you're preaching to the choir. :)

My whole point regarding California is that we do not and will not cooperate with his bullshit, hence immigrants here should be safe filling out their census forms. Theoretically, based on what I quoted Garcetti saying yesterday, everyone should be safe since it's a federal crime to use census data for other than its intended purpose.

Besides, how much more damage can Trump do in his remaining few months in office? :D

With the recent ruling that electors must vote according to their states' popular vote, hopefully this will be a thing of the past.

That's assuming he a) isn't re-elected and b) will willingly leave on his own accord if he loses. Personally I'm almost sure he will lose the popular vote count by a massively decisive margin but this is America. We do not and have not elected our President by popular vote. The Electoral College, made up of just 538 people, is used to determine who will be president. We, the public do get a vote on who those 538 people are, nor do we get to vote on who selects those 538 people (that's done by each state's Democratic and Republican parties). It's the Electoral College numbers that are the deciding factor every presidential election. And despite your steadfast faith in Californian politics, the reality is there are 49 other states (plus several seized territories) that make up the U.S. We all like to live withing our own bubbles of entitlement but the problem is we all live inside at least some kind of communal bond. Anyway, if he loses, going by his now observed history it's not likely he will just accept election results that don't go his way. November is most likely to be a very notable point in history, even in California.

But getting back to our Census, having relatives (all U.S. citizens) who were locked up camps in WWII I don't view the census to be some kind of patriotic symbol. It's used as a tool by the government for whatever it needs it to used for. Currently another example of census data at work is Puerto Rico. It's been a part of the U.S. Census for over 100 years now:
    https://www.census.gov/history/www/programs/geography/island_areas.html
and it only recently will be receiving FEMA assistance it's been denied from for three years, only after pressure from the House of Representatives after Trump lost control of it in the 2018 mid-term elections:
    https://www.politico.com/news/2020/...old-on-82b-in-puerto-rico-disaster-aid-099139
But with tentative control over the Legislative and Judicial branches he can still just pump out executive orders to continue manipulating the Census in other ways:

Again, you're preaching to the choir, @svim. I know every despicable thing the orange imbecile has done since taking office. I'm actually sifting through piles of mail right now from organizations I support, such as NARAL and the Southern Poverty Law Center, which includes graphics, maps, statistics, even day-by-day breakdowns of crap he's done...like this:

    IMG_20200723_141132.jpg

I fully expect corruption in November--just like last time. But now, with formerly staunch supporters banding together to elect Biden, I see a glimmer of hope. Remember that recent rally, where the pathological orange liar stated that 'more than a million supporters requested tickets'--and only 6,000 showed up? That was one of the first signs that the tide had turned.

With prominent Republicans stating that they're sorry they voted for him, combined with his constant outrageous lying, his miserable handling of the pandemic, and 90% of Americans [by AP poll today] wanting schools to remain closed, the pool of people actually still supporting him is shrinking down to a puddle...

As for California, I know what I see. Trump hates us, and with good reason. We do not cooperate with his racist, xenophobic policies. Period. So I stand by what I've said about the census.
