Root Please help noob Ascend 2 2.3.6

Hi
I am wanting to install CWM 4.0.1.4M865 and then install rom A2tude to my device. I have Ascend 2 running android 2.3.6 cricket Muve will this work? If not what do I need to do?

Do I need root before I can install CWM or since I'm installing a complete rom it will take care of that? Just a little confused by all the info here on the forums.

And if it all goes wrong can I recover it?
