We are now and android family with my wife having the ally and i have the droid.

I'm a little jealous of a particular widget she has that i've seen on a nexus screen shot also. It's long and black and allows you to toggle through several phone features like wifi, bluetooth, etc...

what is the widget called and what do the icons represent?

turning sync off will allow you to maintain 3g features like the browser, market and mms, and keep your phone from constantly syncing with google and facebook for your contacts, gmail, and calendar.
