    What phone do you have?

Try removing the back of your phone and cleaning off the speaker part w/ a wet cloth or a wet wipe of some sort. Dust can get inside and damage the sound quality.

What do you mean by your speaker sounds crackly?
Does it sound as if there are large bursts of sound and pops coming through it or the sound is low and fuzzy?

It is either loud and "warbly", or so quite that there is no sounds for any app, notification, phone calls, etc. I can't remove the back as it is a S7 and the back is not easy to remove without heat...

The waterproofing aspect of S7 models make something like repairing/replacing the speaker troublesome. Not only is the back glued down (as you already referred to) there's an extra seal around the speaker. I would think you should still be covered by a warranty for a defect like this if you're thinking about sending it back.
