POP issues with default email client

    I have a huge issue with email. I successfully added my Google Apps email account using POP. The client does indeed download the emails, though very slowly, but the main issue I have is that as soon as I manually check for new emails or the Captivate automatically does it (I set it to 15 minutes intervals), all the emails in the inbox on the phone disappears. After much investigating, it turns out that all emails that was already downloaded prior to a reload, were sent to Trash in Gmail. So when I log in online, every message that was originally downloaded to the phone, was now found in Trash.
    The only workaround I have found in order to keep the emails on the phone, is to delete them instantly. That way they remain in the Deleted Messages until I manually remove them.

    So my question is, does the default email client work like it should at all or should I replace it with something. And if so, with what?
    It's a shame that a new phone such like this have issues with such a basic task, so I really hope the default client can be fixed somehow.

    I've been using MailDroid for all of my email. It seems to work much better, and update much quicker, than the default app. You can find it on the market.

    I use a task killer, do you leave these mail clients open for it to update/notify in the background? (Like you do with the default mail client)

    I installed and configured MailDroid but it has the same issue. The emails gets downloaded only to be put in the trash folder (in Gmail) and removed from the phone all together as soon as I refresh/fetch for new emails (whether there are any new ones or not).

    I use Thunderbird on my main desktop computer. I have POP setup in Gmail to move the email from the Gmail inbox to my Thunderbird inbox (or whatever flter depending on the filter I have). That way my Gmail account is always empty once I download them on my desktop computer, just the way I want it.
    I just came from a Tilt (with Windows Mobile 6) and the way it worked there was that it downloaded the email but left a copy on the server, bypassing the Gmail POP rule (again, I only want my desktop computer to actually remove them).

    However, with the Captivate, it simply downloads the email to the phone and as soon as the client is refreshed, it removes the email altogether from the phone and puts the email in the Trash folder in Gmail.
    Since both the native client and MailDroid is doing the same thing, it seems like it does not matter what client I use on this device.

    Any ideas?

    Sorry for double posting but here's an update.
    I finally gave up on POP and configured the phone with IMAP. It's a little slow but it seems to work. However, a new issue arose: Thunderbird now does not download the messages in the inbox. I even logged in online and marked them unread, but still no dice. So in the end, this was an even worse solution. Having this many issues with something that has been around since the beginning of the internet is very odd.
    What should I do and how come no one else has issues?

    A friend of mine purchased a Captivate as well and he has the same issue with POP as I have.

    I use Thunderbird and K-9 with IMAP just fine.

    K-9 has some little issues and odd quirks still but for the most part it seems to work ok.

    Did you make sure to reconfigure Thunderbird to use IMAP as well? If one client uses POP and another IMAP, you won't be happy with the results.

    I noticed that. Thunderbird refused to download the messages. I gave up completely on the stock email application since it is absolutely worthless. I simply use the Gmail app that already came installed. It works exactly the way I want, so I simply replaced the launcher icon with the Gmail one.
    Problem "solved".

    N00b question regarding POP e-mail. How does the e-mail client (either default or app) work in terms of removing e-mail from the server. I'd like to read my home e-mails on my Captivate, but I want to download them at home (and remove fom server at that point). Is this possible? Or if I check them on my phone do they automatically download to the device?

    You're telling the email client where to look for messages. You give the email client the information on where to go, and your password, and it goes there and pulls the email from the inbox and delivers it to your device.
