I've had HTC One-X with AT&T for about a year now. All of a sudden I am getting pop ups trying to sell me all these different apps.

I'm guessing I incurred this downloading one of my apps (I like trivia games). I have also tried adware removal app to no avail.

Could someone please help me get rid of this annoyance?

    thx

You installed an app that has push notifications. Either A) Go through and disable all push notifications for each trivia game or B) Begin uninstalling various apps until the ads stop.

If you are on Jelly Bean you could try running in Safe Mode (disabling all apps you added without uninstalling them) and if the problem stopped it was caused by an app that you added.

If it is an app you added then you will have to investigate until you find it.

No need to go through any of those lengthy processes. Just download Lookout Ad Network Detector, it'll tell you exactly which app is causing it.
