Portable wifi hotspot - diagnostics

I have a Huawei Ideos U8150 with Android 2.2. I'm having some probs with the built in 'portable wifi hotspot'.

I can connect my computer to the phone OK, but I don't seem to get any network connectivity on my computer.

I have tried pinging google.com or it's IP, but I get a 'unknown host' message or 'destination not found'.

I can browse the web on the phone via 3G.

Is there any way that I can diagnose the problem?
