Possible to change ESN and activate as non-smartphone?

When my contract is up, I'd rather not carry around another phone plus the incredible to be able to surf over wifi and make calls, but that's Verizon's only solution for people who no longer want their data plans.

From what I've read, the problem with activating a smartphone is the ESN will force data to be added to the plan.

Is there a way I can take an ESN of another phone I have and change my smartphone to use that ESN instead?

I am already rooted if that helps, I believe I have S-off.

To the best of my knowledge changing the ESN of a phone for any use is illegal. And even if there were legal reasons to do so, we don't want that kind of information being shared here.

As such, I'm going to have to close this thread.
