I called the store i got my epic from to try to squeez them for an additional battery. ( Couldnt hurt to try right) One of the guys told me to bring the phone in for a PRL update..He said sometimes this will increase battery life. I dont think I believe him. Is there any truth to this or his he blowen smoke? BTW u can do this OTA via -setting- about phone-system updates-update PRL. But he told me sometimes it doesnt take OTA?
Just thought I would seek some opinions before I jump to it.
    Thanks

It can help with battery life, but not everyone gets the same results (and then usually only marginal). PRL = preferred roaming list.

It's not going to be the miracle that he's making it out to be though.

Updating the PRL, if available, could help with battery life. The phone would spend less timing trying to get a signal, thus increasing battery life. *228 option 2 is the way to do this, I believe. Might want to search first, I haven't had to update my PRL in months and don't remember.

Will updating OTA erase any of my data?

Not if just doing an OTA update for your PRL.

I've always done mine the way you described in your original post.

*228 doesn't work on my phone.

Go to menu ~ settings ~ about phone ~ system updates and there is a tab there to update the PRL.

Updating the PRL doesn't help battery life in itself, it resets the radio which gets rid of the time without service issue (if you have it). Putting the phone in Airplane mode for a few seconds will do the same thing... BUT I've noticed that resetting the radio via PRL Update is less likely to cause the GPS not to work compared to using Airplane mode.
