Help problems getting into voicemail

I have a problem getting into my voicemail about 90% of the time when it ask for my passwood it does not automatically dial it but if I pull it away from my ear then it will recognize the password sometimes it works properly. But majority of the time it doesn't. I have *86,, then my password. I can leave the
phone by my ear for 2 sec to 60 sec and nothing until I pull it away. Thanks for any help
