Problems with Messaging

okay when i send a text message over 4g or 3g or anything and there are no pictures or videos or media attached (just text) it sends it as a MMS Message!?!

is this a function of the android phone os? im new to android, i had a iphone before this.

SMS messages need to be 160 characters or less, anything more than that is automatically converted to MMS.
