I've been having problems with the optical pad on my Moment and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for fixing it?

It seems to work fine when I boot the phone up.
The problem seems to happen when the screen locks, I hit MENU to unlock and go back into the phone - that's when the pad will no longer scroll/move around to highlight different icons etc. It will generally stay like this until I shut down the phone and reboot.

Pressing down on the pad still seems to register though so that part works at least.

I'm just not sure what to do. If I take this phone back, it'll be my 5th phone in less than 30 days (it's been a different problem each time and 2 of the times was actually a Sprint rep telling me to take it back when nothing was wrong - like the battery metering issue).

Are other people having issues like this with the Moment or am I just getting a bad string of phones (well save 2 of them). Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - I love this phone - provided that it will work the whole term of my contract.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have to say its the first time I hear of an issue with the trackpad. I don't see another out though, gotta swap it out again.

Well, I use it all the time, and I haven't had any problems. I'd definitely get it replaced if that started happening. It is one of the primary features I love about this phone.

I don't think anyone really uses it. ;)

I guess that makes me a nobody, I use it daily.

Djax- It might be hardware, it also might be something you installed. Before you take it back yet again, try restoring it to factory default. If the problem doesn't reoccur, install your apps one at a time to see if it's one's the culprit. If you do find out it's an app, don't forget to tell the developer and us. Good luck!

The pad is actually very sensitive.
If you boot the phone into test mode, and test the pad, you will find that it registers with a very light touch.
I think it is programed into the phone to need a slight bit of pressure to work properly. Mine seems to respond like a wet sponge most of the time requiring huge finger flicks to get it to register.
This is good and bad. for those who like a d-pad, it is bad, but for those who dont use it, the accidental bumping of it to do things is avoided.
It is a very usefull pad compared to the lame trackball junk on the hero.
The PALM phones have way higher quality balls on them than the hero, that thing feels so cheep.

My track pad is actually a bit crooked, im trying ot figure that out. I'm quite onto details for some things, and I drives me nuts sometimes when i look at it. *shrugs*

mine is a bit crooked too, the top left is slightly higher and the bottom right is slightly lower

Been using mine a lot more lately. I installed Better Keyboard (which is awesome) and use the track pad to fix spelling mistakes not caught by the autocorrect. Haven't noticed anything besides a slight bit of lag once in a while.

My phone has the same bug as the op. If I am browsing and let the screen time out the optical pad will not function when the screen is unlocked.

I have found that if I task kill the browser and turn the screen off , then wait about five minutes. And then unlock the screen the optical pad will function normally, at least untill the screen times out again.

Oh and I love using the pad. Scrolling web pages is natural with it.

I don't use mine. It is really inconsistent...either too laggy or hyper sensitive and it changes everytime I touch it.

I just got the moment yesterday. having the same issue right out of the box before installing anything. has anyone found a fix? thanks.:)

I hate using mine because it doesn't work like a mouse... just highlights everything on a web page or whatever in succession. If it worked like a mouse and gave me a pointer or something, I'd like it a lot more. Or if it would move the webpage instead of highlighting random stuff. I mean, its a touchscreen. I can just reach over and tap what i'm wanting to select.

mine only works when i swipe hard on it. just annoying to use it. i rarely use anyways. on my last moment it didn't take huge swipes to make it move. curious to see how another optic touch pad worked on another phone. i tried it on a blackberry with optic pad at att store and it functioned a lot better then the moments, much more usable.
