Qiestion about phones without a removable battery.

I've always had android phones with removable batteries, Droid, Incredible, Thunderbolt, S3. At one time or another they have all frozen/locked/wouldn't boot, and the only thing that fixed it was a battery pull. There are some phones I'm considering (not iPhone) that do not have a removable battery. Don't those occasionally freeze, and if so how do you get it started again?

Generally these devices have simulated battery yanks by holding the power button for approximately 15-20 seconds.

Some have a small hole in the back with a reset button inside. Use a paperclip or something to push it.

No, that would be a factory reset. A hard reset would just immediately shut down the device terminating everything without saving, just as if you had pulled the battery from a device that has a removable one.

Same thing with the reset button, basically a shutdown and reboot.

This method of holding power works on nearly all phones, regardless of whether the battery is removeable

Yeah I used to just hold down the power button as my phone started losing the date and time if I pulled the battery then forgot the battery was even charged.

But make sure you know what the hole is for - don't go poking a paperclip into a noise cancellation mic by mistake!
