question about android lockdown

Ive got a generic iphone vs android question. I know with my iphone, after i switch, i wont be able to just use my iphone as an ipod touch. As soon as i reset my iphone back to factory settings, i have to connect it to itunes and sign up for service to unlock it. My question, is android like that? If i dont have a sim card in, or a service agreement as with cdma, can i still just turn the phone on and use it as a pda or pmp without cell service? Or does it tool around at a "looking for service" screen?

Yeah, you will. Taking your SIM card out will make you able to use your iPhone just fine as an iPod touch. Don't worry about it.

Also, EVO doesn't have a SIM card. CDMA phones don't have SIM phones. If it's de-activated though it should still work for everything except phone/network usage.
