So handtec.co.uk has this badboy available sim-free/unlocked to be shipped worldwide. I am wondering if I import it to the US, will I have any issues upgrading it to 4.4 like Sony has already promised? Is OTA out of the question? Will I need to root it and download an update manually? These issues aren't stopping me, I'm just curious.

Even if you can't update OTA, you should be able to update it via Sony's PC*Companion tool.

I think they go by build number (or as Sony call it, Customisation ID), not location for updates, so no matter where in the world you are, you should be able to update. You'll just have to wait for whatever region your Customer ID correlates to have the update roll out.

Even if you don't get the OTA, there are other ways and means of flashing software on Sony handsets without rooting. Flashtool will flash any compatible firmware to upgrade/downgrade if needed.
