Polling is when k-9 calls out to the server holding your email and asks "any new emails to download?" So you could set polling to 5 minutes, and k-9 would check for new email every 5 minutes.

If you have aol pushing email to your droid, then there is no need to poll, as the server send the email to k-9, rather than k-9 having to check. Polling is equivalent to 'pull', the setup you have is a 'push'.
