    By posting this I am showing my ignorance, but that is why I am asking the question. I have never been in the military and that is probably why I am curious.

    One of my friends who tends to be a bit of a right wing nut job (not that there is anything wrong with that) posted the following on a face book discussion:

    " I don't know if you guys have read Orwell's 1984 or not but its scary how some elements in the book all ready exist in today's culture. I also wonder what percentage of the military would fight for the right side if it came down to it. I think this country is still a ways off from another civil war, the politicians have to make sure the military is in their pocket before they push the people that far."

    and:

    contexet: answering the question of what the founding fathers would do if alive today.

    " Peacefully redress the government for it's wrongs, call for the ignorant liars to step down from office, if all that fails then forcefully remove them and have them tried for treason. Round up all the commies in the country and have them tried and executed for crimes against the Constitution as well."

    While I hear this kind of talk often, and it is obviously protected as free speech, this is the first time I have heard someone active in military say these types of things. What oaths do Army personnel take? Is this kind of talk acceptable?

    No I am not trying to or intend to get him in any trouble. It just bothered me and I wanted to get some other opinions.

    I'm not sure how the US Army oath goes, but here's the oath for enlisted US Navy personnel.

    If there was a civil war in the US, the military would split based on geo-political lines rather than uniting under a common constitutional position as it would not exist

    This depends on the context and it would be nice to have run

    Regarding this;

    There seems to be a very large minority in the US for whom it would not take much more radicalisation to agree with that
    Commies being anything left of Obama

    It would be worth remembering with the week that's in it (Radio Miladic being brought to trial), that its not just poor third world countries that can violently implode
