I'm trying DVD Catalyst Free but I am reading it will leave black bars on the top and bottom. I was wondering if there any software like Catalyst but doesn't leave the black bars.

I would first start by emailing DVD catalyst to ask if there is a setting you can use to do what you are looking for. They have fantastic support and there are a lot of setting within the software. I don't know for sure, but if I were a betting man, I would bet that you can get it to not show bars with the correct setting in DVD catalyst.

Moved to Android Media since this isn't Droid X specific.

Bars on the top and bottom depend on the aspect ratio of the film you are converting. Any good converter will let you leave those bars (which is what I recommend, as it keeps the aspect ratio at its original state so you dont lose information), or it will let you zoom and crop to get rid of the bars. Obviously by doing this, you will lose information on the left and right of the screen.

Yeah, some movies are just more letterboxed than others, sad to say. Trust me, I feel your pain, its annoying to have a good 25%-1/3rd of the screen not being used.

The black bars is not a problem, because most of the players can select either to show it or to zoom into the video and leave the bars out.

Sometimes, it takes a few converters to try to find the one that produces best results for you. Try also Handbrake.

The non-free version of DVD Catalyst offers a number of options to remove black borders from the video. There are also a couple of articles on my website that gives you an idea of why there are black bars, how to get rid of them, and what the trade-off is when you actually remove them, which basically applies to all video conversion tools.

Black bars can also be added/removed using different free programs.

However, I must complement you for the very good and informative website and for putting a very acceptable price on your product. I see a lot of basic tools that are being offered 3-4 times that price.
    Good work! :)
