So: honestly i dont understand what tethering is. Im a little new to all that. I suppose one question i have though is if, through tethering, i could provide my iPad with internet access from my HTC Incredible while out and about.

I use PDAnet...with that method, you have to have the software on the "computer" end to be able to connect to the cell phone----I'm guessing there is no way to install software to the iPad, since it's basically just an iPod. :D

Until we find a WMWifirouter type program, you can't tether via WiFi. That means you can only tether via BT or USB.

your gonna have to wait until someone roots the incredible to provide access over wifi like they did the droid, or until verizon/someone provides a program that does this. The later will probably incur the tethering fee from verizon. the prior will void your warranty.

I am wirelessly tethering my iPad at work with my omnia on Verizon right now. It will only be a matter of time before they root the incredible and then were golden. The droids tethering worked great when I had it for 30 and it will be the same with the incredible!

I don't think verizon can actually tell you are tethering ever, at least not without closely inspecting data usage.

correct....unless you start using ridiculous bandwidth amounts. If you start downloading blu-ray movies and uploading them through a torrent client or something, they're gonna know a phone can't be doing that much work.

There is a program that makes your phone act like a router so that you can use it as Wifi. Here is a screenshot of it on my phone, one of the things that I like is that it shows how much data you've used so that you can monitor it and not go crazy. It did work with my iPod Touch so it should work with an iPad.

The downside is that to run the program you have to be rooted. The website is here android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code Keep an eye out after the phone releases as I'm sure with the specs on this thing there will be plenty of developing going on.

You don't have to root the HTC Incredible for tethering.

If you download VZAccess Manager for the Incredible, you can use the Incredible, while connect via USB (with "Mobile Broadband Connect" on), to tether.

No, it's not free, but you can turn the feature on and off at a prorated monthly rate of $25, so it's a little less than a dollar a day. Less than what hotels charge for wifi and certainly less than VZW's prepaid USB modem plans.

The original question was on tethering the iPad. USB won't help there.

Is there any such device that could be plugged in via USB to provide wifi tethering to something like the ipad that doesn't have usb?

Youll have to wait to use the BT for the Ipad. It does have BT? Not sure, I personally think the iPad is a gimmick even though I love most Apple products. They make great computers, but I still prefer my android phone over the iPhone.
