i have 3 android phones. Optimus V, Nexus S 4G and Evo V. Of 3, only Evo V has service. OV is a very old phone but it still has a CM 10 release, Bobzhome's work. It runs fairly well considering how old OV is. Most Nexus S 4Gs roms are JB 4.1.2 and 4.2.1. I run Slimrom 4.2.1 and havent ran into any problems yet. Evo V has the best hardware of all 3, how come most roms for it is still at a ICS level ? What are the limiting factors here ? The slimrom i run on my Nexus has a rom size of 79.2, Gapps size of 23.1 and thats only a total of 102.3 MB. Evo V roms are just huge. One example, the V4 by Mobster, even the senseless version is 344.67MB. what is causing our roms to be this big ? Of all phone, are HTC phones just more complicated as far as development? we have X number of Hboot and ENG while the Nexus, i looked on the XDA Nexus forum and didnt see a single thread about any kind of Hboot. I hope to learn something about android phone from this so i can choose a most development friendly phone in the future.

Good questions. I would like to know as well, Considering the HTC One V and EVO V 4G are the only phones Ive even dabbed into root and roms with. And I want to learn to dev for my V 4G and my first kitchen build would not even flash!! lol. This is a pain but Im addicted and want to learn

To my knowledge, it's being worked on. However there are a few things that hinder releases of JB for this phone.

There's nothing close to it that we can port it from, to my knowledge. Different chipsets, screen resolutions, radios, drivers. All of that would have to be coded correctly. That's why 3D doesn't work, WiMax, etc. WiMax is dying out, so that makes it even harder to port. 3D, I think only a small handful of phones can do 3D, this being one. So making 3D work on a non-supported ROM is a nightmare for devs.

There ARE CM10 ROMs for the phone on XDA, but we can't seem to get MMS working. Probably something with WiMax and the way Virgin handles MMS...

    Again, this is all theory.

Well we can use ROMs for this device and evo 3d community over at xda, though evo 3d aosp ROMs only work on our phone after we unlock boot loader, s-off, and update PRI, hBoot, and radio. This device doesn't have a lot of devs, so development over here is A LOT slower compared to Google device(Nexus S 4G). Aosp ROMs are a lot smaller than sense ROMs, 300 - 500MB > 90 - 200MB, most the ROMs over here at the evo v 4g forum is sense but not all. It have aosp ROMs that are jellybean 4.1 & 4.2 over at the evo 3d xda forum, like 6, and we have one specifically for our device over here me on this forum. Manufactures manufacture their phones differently, so certain stuff is manufacture specific(Sense, hBoot, Orion, etc); thats why you don't see any of that at the nexus s 4g forum. Samsung use odion and touchwiz, HTC use hBoot and sense, etc.

All ROMs for most HTC phone that are not aosp, have sense in them. Even though a ROM says its a senseless ROM, it still has sense in it; sense is just hidden VISUALLY. That's why senseless ROMs are so big even though you don't see any sense.

The Smallest I have been able to get a Senseless Rom Down to without losing basic functionality and features was "256 MB" thats the Rom with only the basics installed as you can see Sense is very heavy (large)

interesting, what i can gather from this is the phone itself is difficult to work with ... i used to have a Nook Color, a device that was never meant for full android experience. I used to run MiRaGe CM 7.2 on it and i just took a look they even have CM 10 nightly going. Also the HP touchpad with WebOS even runs 4.1.2 lol. Lack of 3D is not a deal breaker for majority of us, i think. maybe its just HTC then ... too bad i do like the build quality.

i see this is an argument about less people having this phone. then what was it about the Optimus V that attracted devs ? because OV has different version across all CDMA carriers and VM version ended up with the most dev. did verizon really just had less optimus vortex users than VM did with OV ? i see Hboot is a HTC thing .. do u think HTC lock up their devices tighter than other manufactures? bc i dont even remember how i unlocked my Nexus S 4G lol must had been easy, probably something like one click XD. I see sense is hidden in senseless roms ...this explains much in this case do they still "run" and take up resources ? or just sit and take up some room.

I don't know what it is about the ov that attracted so many devs. Motorola locks up their devices the tightest, sometimes even un-unlockable, though some devices they didn't lock up so tight; then HTC is the second hardest. Even though the nexus s 4g is manufactured by Samsung and would expect it to come with touchwiz and only be unlockable with odion, the device was made for Google and Google devices don't get locked up because Google supports developers(they even hired the maker of cyanogenmod, that's why you see cyanogenmod features in ics). Google devices also get a lot of devs because of they're source is out in the open and built on pure aosp, making it easier for devas to develop and port features; plus Google devices are guaranteed to get AT LEAST two ota updates by Google. Compared to other phones who manufactures don't even want to give them one update.

Yeah sense in senseless ROMs, still do take up resources and space but not as much. I'm pretty sure most senseless ROM developers try to get rid of sense as much as possible with losing features(basic function that was on sense like 3d, 4g, etc). I think around 35% of sense is removed in most senseless ROMs.

BTW as I mention before, just have more stable ROMs over there. The only problem is most evo 3d ROMs don't have MMS working for us, but you can fix it by putting the MMS.apk of ROM for our phone into the sense ROM and another file(can't remember which) is need. As for aosp ROMs, all you need to do is get the MMS.apk over at the thread label ''MMS FIX FOR AOKP/CM10/AOSP" on this forum and install it. The AOSP ROMs are pretty solid, im using aokp 3.5.2 jellybean with anthrax kernel. Anymore questions?

I always just thought sense was just the cool weather animation thing... Didn't know 3g and 4g also need sense to run ...

Sense bakes a lot of things into the sense framework.

Edit: Not to hijack a thread here or anything, but Austrie, your thing by your avatar says you're using UltraMatrix. What is that, exactly?

HTC locks 'em up pretty tight.

    I had a wildfire s a couple years ago.....

Still can't s-off that device without an xtc clip lol.

3.5.2 is the version of the ROM, the android version is 4.1. Yes I do like the ROM, I wouldnt be using it if I didn't; though the data locks(when the 3g icon is up there like normal but data isn't working) do get annoying, flicking airplane mode on and off does the trick to get it back on. The things not working I've noticed is 3d, and MMS sending (you can receive though using the special MMS.apk I mentioned before).
I'm using anthrax kernel because I notice the stock kernel was causing random reboots every now and again. You can either flash Mac kernel, anthrax kernel, or butteredtoast kernel; I have only tried anthrax so I don't know if the other solve the random reboots too. When you flash buttered or anthrax you have to edit a certain file in system using a file explorer to get camera working again. Plus I have a nice theme on the ROM.

I'm not sure if its the radio or the ROM that is causing data to lock up(but it probably the ROM though), so I'm going to flash a new radio soon too see. I notice a similar issue on my old phone, Motorola triumph, cm7, so it might be related to all ROMs based on cm.

That was the sense ROM I made and was using; I stopped updating the ROM because a storm hit my area and had no power for like 3 weeks, and then my laptops hard drive failed. So I'm not doing any kind of dev'ing at the moment, even I have a couple leads/ideas for fixing MMS.
