Quick question before I dive in to the G1 owners pool

I am currently a T-Mobile customer and will be getting a new contract soon. I would really like to get a G1, there is but one problem: I absolutely hate the idea of a locked smart phone. So I did some searching, for an approximate total of $425 + shipping, I could sign up as an android developer, and purchase an android dev phone 1, which is, according to the android dev phone info, a sim / boot loader unlocked G1.

My question is this: would I be able to flash, and use a T-Mobile image if I wanted, or a stock android image if I prefer? ( I realise there could be some manual configuration involved, that doesn't bother me)

Any info/feedback is greatly appreciated.
