I know the firmware update kills the rooting option for now. I was planning on rooting, but don't know what the stock firmware is for the phone, where to check it.

What is the string of numbers and where can I find it. If i click firmware update on my phone, it just sits there, doesn't show an update option, so I'm stuck.

I don't want to brick my phone.

The OTA update does not kill the ability to root on the EVO.

But I thought there was an update that does. I'm a little confused.

They initially thought it would, but the other root methods still work. The OTA on the Hero does break root, however.
