I have updated to 2.1 and have been using the device between home and work. While riding the bus, I will either do some quick browsing or listen to Pandora.

Well, a few days ago, my signal type switched from 'Ev' to a 'G', rather than the expected '1x'. Now, I know about '1x' and 'Ev'; how and why did the 'G' appear? What exactly does it indicate? It doesn't show up in the user manual, nor have I seen it on a Sprint phone before this.

That is really strange. The only thing I can think of is that it is some how deciding to show 'G' for GPRS, but that represents GSM mobile data, not CDMA.

Have you tried rebooting your Sprint HTC Hero? Another thing you can try is to toggle the mobile data on and off and see if that resets the display for the mobile data type. I have the HTC Mobile Data widget on one of my home screens. I just tap it on the rare occasion my mobile data decides to quit working.
