I was looking under settings/applications/running services and saw that I have about 160MB used and about 440MB free. Is this what it should be? I thought there was supposed to be 1GB of ram.

I noticed that too. I assumed the rest was used by the OS, but I am not certain.

You would also have to consider what all you've already opened and ran yourself (aside from what's ran by the system. Use that softkey, lower left, right of the Home key to display all that has been run/opened by you since booting up. I'm assuming that most of it stays opened until the system needs more, and then the system closes them out 1 by 1 as it needs the mem.
