Look what visited a neighbor's yard this morning; he's a big one:

    bear.jpg

They're very close to my aunt's house.

Most of these Ring posts are about coyotes, then bobcats, then bears. I always feel like apologizing to the wildlife for [my Arcadia 'ancestors'] having encroached on their habitat, back in the 1940s... :(

Remember if you are having a bad choice, always rethink of the illusion of an outcome, and please do not rob yourself from sanity,
buckle up though, it might be a crazy ride, but we are all forward throughout the chasm of itself..

And another one today. The bears are busy! I'm waiting for one lounging in a pool--those typically end up on the local news. :D

Hi everybody, haven't been here for a long time. Nice to see so many familiar names keeping this off-topic section alive. Moody, I've just been reading about your terrible health ordeal, and wow, you're one tough broad;). I think you had been MIA for awhile when I drifted away from the forums, and now I know why. I still remember being here when you lost your Mom and all you went through with the house and everything. So glad to see you pulled through it all with such class and a positive attitude. Truly inspirational, and I mean that, not just a platitude. I hope everyone is hanging in there in these insane times we're living through.

Thanks! Oh, just trying to keep my head above water like everybody else, I guess. Never really decided to leave, just gradually faded away lol. I kinda lost interest in Android when they became ubiquitous appliances. It was fun when they were new and I could help people, now everyone can use them in their sleep and I'm not really qualified to help with the in-depth problems. I read somewhere that Stinky deleted his profile, I hope that guy is okay. Also doesn't look like EarlyMon is here anymore, has to be one of the smartest and coolest dudes around, I hope he's doing well.
Thanks, olbriar same to you. Still keeping the peace around the forums? How are things around here, still busy as ever? I see the last major update to the site has stuck around for quite awhile.

I'm still trying to keep the peace. It's a far easier job than it once was. The times of 20-30 new members per day are behind us. :( We have a great member base remaining on AF that are super friendly, helpful, and by nature treat their fellow man with respect. A forum is a sum of its members and we have the greatest members around!

Rob has tweaked the current software here and there in hopes to make it more conducive to traffic. Some changes have been good and some not so well received. His intentions are good and the members tolerant. We are still evolving which is a good thing.

It is really great to have you back at AF!

Just kidding--I know how you're using the word. And I agree with everything you said. I think AF has some of the nicest, most knowledgeable--and willing to share their knowledge--members around. On other forums, people asking a simple, basic question--but, to them, it's a big problem--are met with snarky replies like 'Google is your friend.'

@Gmash, I miss Stinky and his crazy, rambling posts. Unfortunately, he got into some sort of trouble here, and I believe he was banned. That was during my absence, so I missed out on all the excitement.

As for @EarlyMon, I miss him, too. So sharp and helpful, but I guess it was time for him to move on. Did you know that @Phases is gone, too?

I hope you'll rethink your ability to help. We get new Android users all the time, along with people who are not very tech-savvy. You can easily find questions on the Android Help board [among others] where your knowledge would be very useful. I encourage you to look around! :D

That's crazy. Do they ever bother peoples pets? I know they try to keep to themselves, but I would still be worried if I had a dog out in the yard. I imagine a cat could get away.

People who leave their pets outside, unsupervised, are fools anywhere, but here in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, they'd be really stupid. Between the coyotes, bobcats, cougars, bears, snakes, hawks, and other predators, small animals don't stand a chance.

My dogs were anything but small [Great Danes], but they were never outdoors alone, either here or when I was living in Dallas. There are far too many dangers for pets outside, and I didn't/don't want any of mine succumbing to them.

Bears don't typically pose a threat to other animals, especially if they're non-threatening, but even that isn't cut and dry. Just yesterday, a bear attacked a woman who'd fallen asleep in her backyard. She lives a few blocks away from my aunt.

A few months ago, someone was walking their dog, 'next door' in Pasadena, in broad daylight, on a city street, and a coyote snatched the dog. A recent post on Ring detailed a coyote scaling the yard's wall, grabbing the dog who'd just been let out to potty, and carrying him back over the wall. The owners were able to get the dog back from the coyote; he suffered numerous puncture wounds and needed medical care, but did survive.

    Sorry for rambling! :)

We recently lost our yellow lab of 14 years, so no pets at the moment, but I don't want to give you the wrong idea, she was never left out for extended periods of time, just to do her business, but we didn't have to watch her every second. There's no wildlife like that around here, maybe a raccoon in the wee hours, but of course she was safely inside at night. Kind of cool that you have so much nature intermingling with the humans, but obviously you need to take extra precautions. Scary to think about your dog being snatched away or getting attacked by a bear in your own yard, but as you say, it's really their territory. The only predators left in this urban hell I live in walk around on two feet.

Edit to add: My sister has a Great Dane. They are awesome sweet dogs.

Oh, I'm so sorry. :( Would you like to share some pics? I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see them.
I wasn't referring to you at all. I'm sorry I gave that impression.
The thing is, there's this other kind of predator--and they're everywhere: humans. People steal pets, for a variety of reasons, including: torturing them, using them as bait for fighting dogs, selling them to labs for vivisection, holding them for ransom, selling them, etc. That's why my mantra is 'no pet should ever be outside unsupervised.'

I imagine it absolutely kills Boris to be referring to 'national hibernation' instead of 'aestivation'.
