Random unnamed updates

I have had this phone (tcl lx) for about a week , and continually am getting prompts to download software updates, there is never any description of the update, and I cannot ever locate what was actually updated. I also continually have 'suspicious activity' found on my Google account , even after changing passwords. I again at this moment am being promted to install yet again another unnamed 'software update' ... Am I tripping or is there something sketchy happening with my phone ?

I am constantly getting messages from these strange numbers telling me to apply the updates, I am new to straight talk, and this phone ,but I've never had anything like this with any other phone before and it's kinda tripping me out 🤣

Software update notifications received by SMS? Never seen that before. Could be a scammer thing, to trick you into installing something nasty? Also it looks like an SMS short code Depending on where you are, what country you're in, and your carrier, you might be charged premium rates for these messages. Suggest you check your phone bill.

I am so sketched out by it... It's happened several times, 6 I think since I got this phone a week ago , and started immediately. I live in Minnesota , I've owned cell phones for 20years and I've never seen anything like this . I'm unsure where to even turn to ask what is going on either, I show people and they think I'm paranoid ... But .. there has been several times my phone has acted very strange. It's already downloaded 5 of these 'updates' automatic if I'm connected to my wifi,I'm so paranoid at this point I won't connect my phone to my wifi until I figure out what this actually is.

first off check to see if the phone really needs an update. settings>about phone>check for updates (not familiar with your phone, so it might be slightly different to get to the update section). if your phone needs an update, then update it.

also you can just block the number from sending you text messages.

if the issue persists then i would take the phone in to your carrier.

I'd send, or take, it right back to where you bought it, and get a replacement. You may have to jump through hoops, but just persist, telling them there's a fundamental problem with the phone and you want it replaced. If that fails...

Have them look it over, checking everything they can check. If they find nothing wrong, you're basically stuck with two choices: accept and use it as it is, or do a factory reset. I'd do the latter.

If you already have anything on it you want to keep, save it somewhere, log out of Google, and proceed with a reset.

Then, from a computer, log in to your Google account and set up 2-factor authentication. From then on, anyone trying to access your Google account will have to pass both verification methods.

Now fire up your phone and set it up. The problem should be solved. If not, let us know!

Are you with Tracfone? I had an Alcatel A574BL 2 years ago, then a TCL A503DL which I broke in 2 weeks, then the cheap TCL A501DL. All if them got the same exact message you show. No documentation for it online, customer service at Tracefone clueless as usual. But the message doesn't DO anything, It's like it gets blasted out every few days even after you do a system update from settings/system/system update. Tracfone is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, which means they resell the big 4 mobile operators (in the US) and they don't have access to all the records the actual operator gets, like handshakes that an update was actually installed. But for security minded people it's unnerving getting those text messages, and also scary that it so many people are NOT bothered by it, they install any game or porn thing without even reading the terms...
