Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

We have a good digital antenna on the roof, and we can get Denver and the Springs local.
Never had cable. Never wanted cable. Asked once about getting a channel to follow just a baseball team and was told impossible, I had to take all the movie crap. That got me called a couple of names.

I have the last laugh. I can get MLB, the Sy fy? channel, Netflix, Amazon, quite a few free ones like PBS and Smithsonian. The limited no box dish channel is available, too.
Between books and the Roku, we are pretty set.

Plus, if I record something OTA, I can always use Linux and edit the ads out.

How can I get the current season of The Walking Dead on the internet? I haven't found any legal way of doing that, where I could watch current episodes within a day or 2 of broadcast. For free, or without buying episodes. Is there a way?

Sorry, yes TWD is a gotta watch it after the fact show (one of the reasons we opted to go ahead and go back to a service provider - it's hard to avoid the spoilers) However, that said, I have, right now, on my DVR, the ENTIRE season of TWD and Talking Dead that we have yet to watch. So I pointed that out to the Mrs. and the conversation was over. We added IZombie to the watch list last year and it bumped TWD from the weekly watch rotation. We were planning to watch it during vacation in May.

So I guess we can wait for it to hit Netflix.

What's grinding my gears at the time is this stupid FODMAP diet the doctor has me on, I thinks it's sucks..... all the things I like are the things on the list that I can't have
Ain't that always the way?

Just once, I would like my doctor to tell me, "you're going to die if you don't stop eating salads and start eating cheesecake"

Sounds like the Diet my father is stuck with, after having a Heart Attack this past October.

He has been given a huge list of things he can't have. I feel bad for him, but he is making the best of it.

@ Gnash: Which is really sad, considering Gone Girl sucked compared to Flynn's other two novels.

@Zuben: have you read Bones Burnt Black? Is a nice hard sci-fi with a locked-room murder mystery thrown in for good measure.

I agree her other two are better. Gone Girl was entertaining enough, but was a bit of a gimmick and a cheat. It reminds me of how The Sixth Sense inspired a million movies with "twist" endings for a few years. I haven't read her new-ish novella yet.
If you like Flynn's style, I really liked Save Yourself by Kelly Braffet. It has the same dark tone, but I think it's a bit more literary. The author is married to one of Stephen King's sons. (Not that that makes the book any better.)

A couple of other psychological thrillers I've enjoyed lately were A Head Full Of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay and Inside The Outside by Martin Lastrapes.

Same reason I'm on it, thanks to my 2 heart attacks......... I'm thinking this food will take me out before a heart attack.

I'll have to look for that one. I've been plowing through the books lately, so I'm always searching for something good (but cheap... Can't afford to buy 100 books a year at full price).

It helps that I recently found out that my local library loans out ebooks...

I get most of my Kindle books from the Amazon daily deals and the BookBub emails I get daily. Dead tree copies I usually buy used or on clearance. Too many books in the world to pay š30 for a new release. I think Head Full Of Ghosts is still $1.99, it's pretty good.

My library card is so old it doesn't have a pin #. I need to go in and get it updated so I can use Overdrive myself.

Same here with Bookbub and the daily deals. Also the monthly freebies from Kindle and Samsung Select.

Trouble is - all those books are in the popular category.

I had enough problems finding a copy of "Spam Nation" by Brian Krebs. I have had trouble finding newer photography books (except some coffee table ones), and newer books on Astronomy and Geology when in school. I bought better copies than the library had. Better books will turn up in the used stores. I've given up on the local library. Haven't been in there in over 5 years. Have too many books, now trying to switch to ebooks.

I've found that Amazon does far better than Kobo. Some books you can read free with a membership. I have to use Calibre. I have a Kobo Glo reader and an old wifi Nook. They both do sideloaded EPUBS.

I use Amazon and Calibre as well, but the hoops I have to jump though to get Amazon books onto my tablet...

I have no problem getting them on the Acer - I have to convert to EPUB to get them on the Kobo Glo. Once the files are in EPUB, transfer is no problem. The Vulcan and I share an Amazon account. He has an old Kindle I bought for recipes in the kitchen. We both use e-readers as we don't care for the tablet screens in the daytime. At night, the reflecting screen isn't too bad on a tablet. I will admit it's easier to deal with some problems on a tablet.

The Kobo can be hacked to run pure Linux, not just Kobo's variety. You can put on your own fonts, reader, you name it.

Yeah, my problem is on the Linux side of things... I need to strip the DRM so I can convert to ePub, and I can't seem to find the keys when using the Kindle app through wine. So I boot up Win 10 about once or twice a month, do my downloads and import to Calibre, then back to Mint KDE and import the Calibre (Win) into Calibre (Linux) and then convert to ePub for export to my tablet.

I was using CoolReader, but that app is not being maintained, so I switched to Pocket Book, but there is something weird about the font management somewhere in the process... the italics and bold fonts aren't corresponding to the regular font in many books, and I'm not sure where in the process this is occurring.

Then there's the word drops-- I don't take the time to compare the Kindle version with the ePub version to see if this is happening during translation, or that was a problem in the original book... I get annoyed, but continue to read.

Conservation with my boss today...

BOSS: "You just don't understand {a specific IT Technology}...

ME: " Actually...Yes I do...{correctly explains the specific IT technology}

BOSS: "Well, you shouldn't understand how that {IT Technology} works!

ME:" Why? "

BOSS: " Because I said So!"

???????????????

While I can 'pretend' a lot of things...I absolutely refuse to pretend I don't understand how a technology works when I know how the technology works.

That's bizarre. Did you ask him to elaborate on that answer?
Talking of bizarre workplace behaviour. At a former company I worked at, a colleague was specifically told to 'not help co-workers'. This guy was very smart, and also helpful to other people in the team. But for some reason, the management decided that too much help was a bad thing, and that people should struggle with problems. I don't work at that place any more.

First, my boss is a she, and second...for some totally strange irrational reason she gets really irritated at me when I show any understanding of IT infrastructure or concepts. Just because I don't have an educational background in IT, she seems to believe that there is absolutely no way that I could ever understand any IT concepts.

Honestly, you just described my situation with my boss. My boss is the Facilities Manager and I am a Facilities Administrator.

There are times when the one in-house IT Specialist is busy, and someone will ask me to help then with some minor IT problem. If I can do it, without my boss catching me, I will help them. Otherwise, even though I could easily help then quickly, either I am forced to refuse to help them or my boss tells the person that I can't help them because I wouldn't understand what I am doing.
