Just about all apps I start lead to screen "Add a Google Account."

I have one not registered to gmail email. When I attempt sign in with a yahoo email I use to access a google account on other devices, phone displays "Add a Google Account" because "xxxx@yahoo.comdoes not use Gmail" and prompts to register a new @gmail.com.
So... is this required, or do I have some sort of invalid recognition of my google account email and password?

Yes a gmail account is required to use Android 99.9% of the time. You dont actually have to make use of the account but it provides you access to the Android Market, Helps sync your settings, and a way to unlock you phone should you ever forget a password for your lock screen. Among other things.

You can still use your yahoo email on the phone without problems and leave the gmail app untouched generally. But you need a gmail account as a kind of "phone account"
